Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant and joyous festivals celebrated by Hindus across the world. Derived from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali,” meaning “rows of lighted lamps,” Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
This vibrant festival typically lasts for five days, although the exact duration and traditions might vary across regions and communities. It usually falls between mid-October and mid-November, following the Hindu lunisolar calendar. Each day of Diwali holds unique cultural and spiritual significance.
Preparations for Diwali often start weeks in advance, with people cleaning and decorating their homes, buying new clothes, and preparing traditional sweets and savory dishes. The lighting of oil lamps, called diyas, and the decoration of homes with colorful rangolis (patterns made with colored powders or flowers) are customary practices that add to the festive atmosphere.
The first day of Diwali, known as Dhanteras, marks the beginning of the celebration. It is dedicated to wealth and prosperity, and people often purchase gold, silver, or utensils as a symbol of good fortune.
The second day, Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. It involves early morning cleansing rituals and the lighting of lamps to ward off evil forces.
The main day of Diwali falls on the third day. Families come together, offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and seek blessings for a prosperous year ahead. Fireworks illuminate the night sky, and homes are adorned with lights, creating a dazzling spectacle.
The fourth day is observed as Govardhan Puja or Annakut, where offerings are made to Lord Krishna and gratitude is expressed for the harvest.
The final day, Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being, and families gather to strengthen their relationships.
Beyond its religious significance, Diwali holds cultural and social importance. It is a time of unity, forgiveness, and spreading joy by exchanging gifts, visiting relatives and friends, and sharing meals.
Diwali transcends religious boundaries and is celebrated by people of various faiths, fostering a sense of communal harmony and togetherness. It symbolizes the triumph of righteousness and the enduring victory of light over darkness, resonating with the universal message of hope and positivity.
Diwali primarily holds immense significance within Hinduism, as it is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar. However, the spirit and celebrations are embraced by various other religious and cultural communities, fostering a sense of inclusivity and shared festivity.
Jainism: Diwali has special significance for Jains as it commemorates the spiritual awakening, or nirvana, of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. For Jains, Diwali marks the day when Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment, emphasizing the triumph of spiritual light over darkness.
Sikhism: For Sikhs, Diwali holds historical importance as it coincides with the celebration of Bandi Chhor Divas, which marks the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, from imprisonment along with several Hindu kings. It signifies freedom and the victory of righteousness, and Sikhs celebrate this day by lighting up the Golden Temple in Amritsar and other gurdwaras with lamps and candles.
Buddhism: In some regions and among certain Buddhist communities, Diwali is observed as a festival symbolizing the Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism and the celebration of Emperor Ashoka’s embrace of non-violence and peace. While not as widely celebrated within Buddhism as it is in Hinduism, some Buddhists mark this occasion.
Beyond these religious affiliations, Diwali has transcended religious boundaries and is celebrated by people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds across the globe. In multicultural societies, individuals of Christian, Muslim, and other faiths often partake in Diwali festivities, appreciating the festival’s message of unity, light, hope, and the triumph of good over evil.
Diwali’s universal themes of unity, compassion, the victory of light over darkness, and the pursuit of goodness resonate with people from various walks of life. It has become a symbol of communal harmony, bringing people together to celebrate shared values and fostering a sense of inclusivity and joy across diverse communities.
